About the Art

Bill works in many mediums, alternating from creating exquisite jewelry pieces, to etching, to work with pastels and acrylic painting, and mixed-media pieces. He also excels at rug hooking. One can view his work, alongside the work of his late wife, Nancy, at their studio north of Questa. Bill welcomes guests year-round and is a stop on the Questa Art Tour.

Bill was born in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1930’s then moved to Orlando, Florida at age eleven. Although Orlando was not the large city it is now, Bill eagerly studied all the art and mechanical courses on offer. He left central Florida for college and earned his BS at the Georgia Institute of Technology with plans to become an architect. Though that was not to be.

He served in the U.S. Army for twelve years of active duty and reserve, and followed this with a career in the paper industry, from production at a paper mill in Tennessee to packaging engineer.

Bill met the love of his life, Nancy Thompson (Brown), in Maryland in the mid-Sixties. Nancy was already an established and well-respected artist and teacher, inspiring an intense interest in Bill to return to his love of art and develop his own skills. He studied art at the University of Maryland, Maryland Institute of Art and at the Art League of Northern Virginia.

The couple moved to New Mexico in 1996 to be close to his wife’s son, and Bill continued his art studies at UNM Taos, and in courses with master Spanish Colonial tinsmith, Vern Lucero.
